I may be looking in the wrong place, but this page doesn’t have a link for an upgrade of software any more. You may have to lean on Targus a bit, but it only took a couple of exchanges before they indicated that they’d be sending my upgrade CDs. See my earlier post for the info on how I got the upgrade.

My fingers are enrolled, and the software allows me to logon to Windows (and other applications) with my fingerprint only. I’ve got the software and the DEFCON Authenticator running on my laptop right now, and it functions exactly as (I feel) it should.

I’m overjoyed to report that the discs do include a full (well, at least functional ) version of the Softex OmniPass software. Well, folks, the three upgrade discs that I ordered from Targus arrived this weekend. Whatever they packaged in the box is not intended to be a complete solution – that much is clear to me. Generally speaking, we got the shaft on this deal – the software to run these things looks to cost more than the hardware itself.
If you’re not a WinXP user, then I’m not sure what to tell you. You might try mentioning the link indicating that an upgrade is needed for WinXP users (in the FAQ at ). I started with feedback to their parts request area, and it took a couple of go-rounds before I heard anything back. If anyone else wants to try to order one in the meantime, you can give it a shot through Targus’ “Contact Us” link on their site.

It’ll be at least 10 days before I get the update (especially considering that the holidays are here), but I’ll describe the contents of this mystery “upgrade kit” when I finally get one. Nevertheless, I’m going to ask for three of the kits to go with the three Authenticators I bought. If the upgrade kit isn’t the actual software (as advertised on their site), then I’m not exactly sure what I’ll be ordering. Also let me know the exact quantity of upgrade kit you need. Please let me know if I can process the order. However it would take 10 Business days to reach to you via USPS. The Defcon XP upgrade CD is available and I can process the order for you. The software, is an Upgrade Kit for Win XP users and it is not the SecureSuite software, or Omni Pass software. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your continued patience. I did hear back from Targus after I pushed the issue further, and this is their reply: I have SQL Query Analyzer on my desktop (as a developer), but come on – we’re not talking about standard operating software here! At one point, they even instruct the end-user to open up SQL Query Analyzer to run a script. I can’t possibly believe that they intended for an end-user to run two installations, manually modify a non-existent database, and provide input values that are complete unknowns. I hate to say it, but this’ll probably end up going down in the history books as “the lousy-deal deal”īy my best reckoning, the software that came with the unit is only intended to be an add-on for an existing installation or enterprise security infrastructure of some sort. I can’t very well give someone the box and say, “oh, by the way – you’ve got to drop $40 to get software before you can play.” At least with the printers I bought (the same day), the deal clearly stated that no ink was included … There goes the idea of giving these as Christmas presents. The “software” that was packaged with the device is not a complete and workable solution, and to purchase software for the unit looks to cost more than the unit itself.
